The passenger front airbag inflator may explode

February 25, 2019

PhotoSubaru of America is recalling 452,630 model year 2010-2014 Tribecas, WRXs, Legacys & Outbacks, model year 2010-2011 Imprezas and model year 2010-2013 Foresters sold, or ever registered, in Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

The vehicles are equipped with air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontairbag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment.

In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger front airbag, the inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.

Such explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

What to do

Subaru is notifying owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator, free of charge.

The recall began on January 25, 2019.

Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is TKC-19.
